The Common App simplifies the process for students applying to more than one university by allowing the submission of a standardized admission application to any of the more than 500 Common App member colleges and universities (spanning 47 states, the District of Columbia and seven countries outside of the United States).
UPDATE: Read our update about the 2020-2021 essay prompts here. The Common Application has announced that the 2019-2020 essay prompts will remain the same as the 2018-2019 essay prompts. Based on extensive counselor feedback, the existing essay prompts provide great flexibility for applicants to tell their unique stories in their own voice.
In this article, I’ll outline two totally different approaches to figuring out which Common App essay prompt is right for you and help you brainstorm possible ideas for each. I'll also talk about what makes great college essays great, and give examples of what you want to avoid when crafting your essay.
Abigail: The Coalition Application is much newer; founded in response to increasing technological difficulties on the college-side with the Common Application and a desire to increase accessibility to college for students through free counseling, it wasn’t until fall of 2016 that students were able to submit their applications through this platform. 111 colleges accept the Coalition App.

Hello, students and parents of the future class of 2025! The time has come. The Common App essay prompts for 2020-21 have been released and—spoiler alert—they’re exactly the same as last year’s! 2020-21 college applicants, like those who came before them, will have seven (that’s right, seven) essay prompts to choose from. If more colleges accept, say, the Common App, that’s the one to use. Step 5: Submitting the Common App. As you can see, there’s a lot to be filled out on the Common App, and you’ll most likely go back and change some of your responses more than once. Once you’ve completed the Common App and your individual colleges’ supplements to your satisfaction, it’s time to submit your application.
The Common Application essay topics are broad. Please note that Coalition and Universal Application essay questions may differ. While this might seem daunting at first, look at it as an opportunity to write about something you care about, rather than what you think the Admissions Committee wants to hear.
The Common Application offers students the ability to complete one application and essay and send it to multiple member schools, as opposed to having to complete each individual college's application.

If your parents never received a complete degree, but completed high school, I think that the best course of action would be to put down High School as their level of education, or you could make a note on the space and specify that they had some college education, though not enough to obtain a degree. A first generation college student refers to a person whose parents never received a degree.
